Live Bloombox Blueprintmusic gig...
WELCOME BLOOMBOX and BLUEPRINTMUSIC FANS!
Thank you Angry Laughter, Roland/Lill and everyone else involved in hosting and making the first Bloombox House Concert a fantastic success. And, of course, thank you to Blueprintmusic for two super sets brimming with beautiful Bluegrass, amazing Americana and a unique range of artful acoustic originals plus some killer covers peppered with an array of instrument switcheroos to work in some belting banjo, mandolin, detuned guitar and even some unexpected but unique tribal drums to give every song a fresh texture that complimented the unforgettable cello, string bass and fiddle. The performance started strong and built up to a sweet yet haunting finale with Ghosts and Eskimos.
Kate's vocals were keen and captivating. She sang softly and sweetly subtle and soulful at times and then powerfully and perfectly pure at others. Kate easily elicited and evoked the emotions and refound the feelings first felt when her lyrics were originally put to paper. Doug and Kate's songwriting skills were evident throughout the concert as they played many of the over sixty or songs they had written together. Doug's guitar work was masterful, fresh, diverse and entertaining.
Josh's percussion stylings added an unexpected and unique flair to many of the songs and he switched to guitar and dobro when the songs called for it and few if any at all could tell that he had picked up these instruments for the first time only recently with drums being his lifelong instruments of choice. The group arrived with a big U-haul loaded down with many of Josh's drums, many hand-made in fact. Grover was seated with his cello yet a stand out in many of the songs. His plucking and bow work came to a climax with the groups final Ghosts & Eskimos song adding real dimension to the song that is the namesake of their latest CD.
Ryan's bass really complimented Grover's cello in the finale and it was astonishing how quickly and well he played songs that he only recently learned having just joined the group. He sat out only a few tunes (and entertained Noah) but played the vast majority like he had been a founding member. Finally, Matt rounded out the ensemble with his mandolin and fiddle performances which were often lively and vivid for Blueprint's bluegrass and Americana pieces and stirring and haunting in the finale. Although his Greatful Dead repertoire may not have surfaced this night, Matt demonstrated a striking range like all the members of the group--a diversity and unique style that proved immensely entertaining and easily captivated the house concert audience's attention for the entire hour and a half performance even though there was a tempting spread of great food and drinks only a room away.
This was the first concert in the BloomBox House Concert series and it set the bar high for performances to follow. Members of the group were exceedingly open and friendly before, during and after the performance and talking to the performers during the break for dinner rivaled the performance itself. If you have never seen Blueprint Music or attended a house concert, you should be doing some googling to find out where you can because it was a fun and memorable experience worth trying and repeating.
